This is an unofficial history compiled by Hwang Hyeon (1855-1910), a scholar from the late Yi Dynasty of Korea. "Maecheon" was Hwang Hyeon's pen name. It contains records from the start of the Daewongun government in 1864 to the Japan-Korea Annexation in 1910. It is extremely rich in content, including important events in domestic and foreign affairs, the actual conditions of the Daewongun and Min governments, corruption and swindling in the civil service examinations, popular and national movements, corruption and tyranny of local officials, and culture and customs. Hwang Hyeon was so angry at the Japan-Korea Annexation that he committed suicide by taking poison. The following year, his disciples published "Maecheon Collection," and in 1955, after liberation, the Korean National History Compilation Committee published a printed version of "Maecheon Yareok," which is used as a basic historical material for research into modern Korean history.
