A holy day in the Christian church. The original word means Advent. It is a four-week (six in the Eastern) period of preparation for the coming of the Lord (the Nativity and the Second Coming) just before Christmas. In the Eastern Church, it begins in mid-November, and in the Western Church, it begins on the Sunday closest to November 30 (the feast day of St. Andrew). It is the beginning of the year in the church calendar. It has been held since the 6th century. During this period, no official weddings are held, and it is a solemn occasion. In the Anglican Church and the Lutheran Church, it is called Advent.

キリスト教会の聖節。原語は来臨の意。主の来臨 (降誕と再臨) にそなえる準備期間でクリスマス直前の4 (東方では6) 週間。東方教会では 11月なかば，西方教会では 11月 30日 (聖アンドレアの祝日) に最も近い主日から始る。教会暦における年初にあたる。6世紀から行われた。この期間中，公式な結婚式は行わず，厳粛に過す。聖公会，ルター派教会では降臨節という。
