stòria (English spelling)

...A genre of painting that generally refers to paintings that depict historical events or the deeds of specific people, but can also include paintings based on legends. Originally, historical paintings were created when powerful people or ruling systems had a strong desire to glamorize real events. In ancient times, the most common subject matter was battle scenes to show off victories. In ancient Egypt, battle scenes were depicted in the murals of the temples of Seti I and Ramses II of the 19th Dynasty. In Greece, the Battle of Marathon (5th century BC) by Polygnotus at the Stoa Poikile in Athens and the Battle of Alexander the Great (c. 300 BC) by Philoxenos of Eretria (date of birth and death unknown) were also depicted.
