A port town in Namibia, in southwest Africa. Population 21,000 (1981). In Afrikaans, it is called Walvisbaai. It is the largest port in Namibia and the starting point of the inland railway line. It is also an important fishing base with a cannery. The town and its surrounding area of 1,124 km2 became a British exclave in South West Africa, which was then German, in 1878, and came under the administration of the Cape Colony in 1884, and subsequently became part of South Africa. It became a point of territorial dispute in connection with the Namibian independence issue, but was officially returned by South Africa in 1994.
