The Mande peoples in Mali include the Bambara (1.66 million), Soninke (Sarakole) (420,000), Malinke (300,000), Khassonke, and other agricultural peoples, as well as the Dyula traders who are engaged in trade. Other tribes with different linguistic roots, such as the Atlantic and Voltaic languages, include the Fulbe (Fulani, Pool) (550,000) who live in the inland delta region formed by the Niger River in the center, the Senufo (430,000) who live in the south, the Songhai (300,000) who live in the great bend of the Niger River in the east, the Dogon (240,000) who live in the Bandiagara Mountains, the Tuareg who live in the desert in the north, and the Maure who live in the Sahel region to the south. The Bambara are the largest in population, and are also residents of the capital, Bamako, making them the most powerful people in the country.
