Aristogeitōn (English spelling)
A middle-class citizen of ancient Athens. Dates of birth and death unknown. On the day of the Panathenaea in 514 B.C., he plotted with Harmodius and other comrades to assassinate the tyrant Hippias and his brother Hipparchus. However, the plan failed, and he ended up killing only Hipparchus, after which he was caught and executed. The incident was likely caused by a love speculation involving Harmodius, who was still a young man. However, later Aristogeiton came to be regarded as a legendary hero who overthrew a tyrant.
