Penetrant testing

Japanese: 浸透探傷 - しんとうたんしょう

A type of non-destructive testing. A colored liquid or a solution of a fluorescent substance is applied to the object being tested, and is allowed to soak into cracks, pinholes, and other flaws. A fine white powder (developer) is then used to highlight the defects, allowing them to be detected. Unlike magnetic flaw detection, this method can also be used on non-magnetic materials, but it cannot be applied unless the defects are visible on the surface.

非破壊検査の一つ。着色した液体または蛍光物質の溶液を被検査物に塗り，割れ目やピンホールなどのきずにしみ込ませ，白色微粉末（現像剤）によって欠陥を目立たせて検出する。磁気探傷法と違い非磁性体にも利用できるが，欠陥が表面に現れていないと適用できない。
