Born: 1728, Yaroslavl
Died June 28, 1778. A Russian poet from Moscow. Born into a landowner's family, he began his creative career after his military retirement. He first published poems and translations in magazines such as Free Time, but gained fame with his epic poem Igrok lombera (1763), which satirized the stupidity of aristocratic life. He later participated in the activities of the Free Economic Society, while at the same time rebelling against Catherine II's official literature with N. Novikov and others. In his work Elisei, ili razdrazhënnyi Vakkh (71), which features the violent commoner Elisei as the protagonist, he attempted a comical and sharp social criticism. In his later years, he joined the Freemasons and wrote odes with strong religious overtones, such as Derevenskii prazdnik (77).
