The Norman conquest of England, which began in 1066 when William, Duke of Normandy, conquered England and became king, marking a major turning point in the history of the British Middle Ages. Earlier that year, Edward the Confessor, heir to the Anglo-Saxon throne of the House of Wessex, died without an heir, and his brother-in-law, Harold, Earl of Wessex (1022?-66), proclaimed himself king. However, William claimed the throne, arguing that he was a distant relative of the Confessor, that the Confessor had previously promised him the throne, and that Harold had previously sworn allegiance to him, and so he prepared to invade England.

ノルマン人のイングランド征服をいい，1066年ノルマンディー公ウィリアムがイングランドを征服して王となり，ノルマン朝を創始した事件。イギリス中世史上，一大画期をなす。この年の初め，アングロ･サクソンのウェセックス家の王統を継ぐエドワード懺悔王が嗣子なくして死ぬと，その義弟にあたるウェセックス伯ハロルド(1022？‐66)が王を称した。しかしウィリアムは，自分が懺悔王の遠縁にあたること，懺悔王が以前から自分に王位を約束していたこと，またかつてハロルドが自分に臣従を誓ったことなどを理由に，王位を要求してイングランド侵入を準備した。
