The name of the region that included the southern part of the Danube, central Austria, and parts of Bavaria in the ancient Roman period. The early Celtic kingdom of Noricum was much larger, including the surrounding areas, but when it was attacked by the Germanic Cimbri around the end of the 2nd century BC, it was rescued by Rome, and thereafter came under Roman protection, developing an excellent culture in the late La Tène period. It was eventually annexed by Rome around 15 BC and became a province, and was rapidly Romanized. It was known for its mineral resources, especially iron and gold, and large amounts of raw iron were exported to Rome. Noricum's swords are often sung in the works of the 1st century BC poet Horace. Attacks by Germanic tribes continued, starting with the invasion of the Marcomanni in 167, but by the end of the 5th century, the Franks and Goths had settled there.
