Ceratium hirundinella (English spelling) Ceratium hirundinella

Japanese: Ceratium hirundinella(英語表記)Ceratiumhirundinella
Ceratium hirundinella (English spelling) Ceratium hirundinella

...This species lives in plankton and is normally beneficial as natural food for fish and other creatures, but some species can cause red tides when they occur abnormally. Ceratium hirundinella grows in large numbers in freshwater, giving the water an unpleasant odor and taste. In the sea, Noctiluca ecintillans , Ceratium furca , Ceratium fusus , Peridinium pentagonium , and Exuviaella marina are commonly seen. ...

From Lake Biwa

...Lake Biwa is somewhat of an exception, however, as the abundant diatoms Stephanodiscus calconensis and Melosira solida are found in other Japanese lakes, but are said to be found as far away as North America. The dinoflagellate Ceratium hirundinella is found throughout Japan and the world, but the one found in Lake Biwa has a different morphology. The water flea Daphnia biwaensis is an endemic species, and like the Honmoroko, it differentiated in Lake Biwa from D. pulex , which is widely distributed in the coastal zone in order to take advantage of the wide offshore area.
