The dinoflagellate Ceratium hirundinella is found throughout Japan and the world, but the one found in Lake Biwa has a different morphology. The water flea Daphnia biwaensis is an endemic species, and like the Honmoroko, it differentiated in Lake Biwa from D. pulex , which is widely distributed in the coastal zone in order to take advantage of the wide offshore area.
