Glue - glue

Japanese:
Glue - glue

A type of adhesive. Paste is used mainly for sticking paper together or finishing laundry. In the past, it was made from starch such as rice, but nowadays most pastes are chemically synthesized. Office glues come in solid and liquid form, and are divided into three types according to the ingredients. (1) Starch paste This is the oldest type of glue, made by dissolving starch in water and boiling it. It has been used since the Heian period, and was popularly known as princess paste until the middle of the Meiji period. It is cheap, but has a drawback in that it is prone to spoilage, and has been used less for office use in recent years. (2) Rubber paste It is also called Arabic paste because it is made by processing the secretions of the gum arabic tree. It takes advantage of the property of solidifying when exposed to air. (3) Synthetic resin paste This uses the adhesive power of synthetic resins such as polyvinyl acetate and polyvinyl alcohol, and is widely used for general office use because it has strong adhesive power and does not spoil. There are many different types on the market, from solid stick types to liquid types with easy-to-use containers, which can be used easily without getting your hands dirty.

In addition, seaweed glue such as funori has traditionally been used for finishing and washing silk fabrics, but in recent years synthetic glues such as polyvinyl alcohol, which can be used on any fabric and does not decay, have come to be used more widely.
