A former town in Nishisonogi County in the southern part of Nagasaki Prefecture. Occupying the tip of the Nagasaki Peninsula and Kabashima Island, it once prospered through coastal sardine fishing, but has now switched to line fishing and other methods. It also engages in deep-sea fishing, and is a thriving seafood processing industry. It produces loquats and persimmons, and its specialty product is karasumi. Take a bus from Nagasaki City. In January 2005, it was incorporated into Nagasaki City along with the towns of Kayagi, Iojima, Takashima, Miwa, and Sotome in Nishisonogi County. 20.91 km2 . 7,543 people (2003).
