The Greek name of the administrative division of ancient Egypt, Sepet. During the Ptolemaic period, Egypt was divided into 42 nomes, 22 in Upper Egypt and 20 in Lower Egypt. The oldest surviving list of nomes remains on the wall of the pyramid mortuary temple of King Snefru of the 4th Dynasty (c. 2613-c. 2494 BC). Its origin probably goes back to the tribal communities scattered along the Nile River in the Predynastic period, which gradually took the form of a nome during the unification process. During the dynastic period, they became local administrative divisions equivalent to provinces and prefectures, and there were also central cities, where the king appointed governors, but these were often hereditary local aristocrats. The number of nomes increased and decreased over time.NomosPlease see the "Nomos and Physis" page.
