… Compared to painting and literature, sculpture is difficult to produce, transport, and exhibit, so it missed out on the first cultural boom of the 1890s. As a result, the giants who appeared before and after the 1890s, such as Charles Summers (1825-78) and Rayner Hoff (1894-1937), do not show narrow-minded cultural nationalism. Most contemporary sculptors who have no pioneering tendencies to rebel against are abstract artists, such as Norma Redpath (1928- ) and Ron Robertson-Swann (1941- ), but even representational artists such as Lyndon Dadswell (1908- ) and George Baldessin (1939-78) do not have a strong tendency to express Australian themes with new designs. …
