Also known as the Caucasus Mountains. A folded mountain range that stretches between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea and divides the Caucasus region into north and south. In Russia, it is called the "Great Caucasus" and is distinguished from the "Little Caucasus" about 300 km south. The southern part of the Greater Caucasus is called the "Transcaucasia". Historically, it has been considered the border between Asia and Europe. It is 1,200 km long and 70 to 200 km wide. There are many high mountains over 5,000 m high, covered with perpetual snow and glaciers, such as Mount Elibrus, Mount Kazbek, and Mount Shikhara (5,201 m). There are two north-south crossing roads: the Georgian Military Highway and the Ossetian Military Highway. → Related articles Ossetia | Georgia | Russia Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
