Also known as jute or tunaso. A fiber crop believed to be native to China or India, it is an annual plant of the Tilia family. The stems are red to yellow-green and 1.5 to 3 m tall. The leaves are lanceolate, 10 to 20 cm long, with sawtooth edges. The flowers are yellow with five petals. After flowering, the stems are left whole or the bark is peeled off and soaked in water to extract the fibers. They are used to make bags, low-grade mats, string, etc., but the fibers are weak to water and not durable. Main production areas include India and Bangladesh.

コウマ（黄麻），ツナソとも。中国あるいはインド原産とされる繊維作物で，シナノキ科の一年草。茎は紅〜黄緑色で高さ1.5〜3m。葉は披針形で長さ10〜20cm，縁には鋸歯(きょし)がある。花は黄色５弁。開花後，茎をそのまま，あるいは皮をはがして水に浸し繊維をとる。袋，下級敷物，ひもなどにするが繊維は水に弱く，耐久性もない。主産地はインド，バングラデシュなど。
