This is a festival of Imamiya Shrine, located in Kita-ku, Kyoto City. In 994 (Shoreki 5), an epidemic broke out throughout the country, so the god of plague was enshrined on Funaokayama and a Goryoe ceremony was held. Later, a shrine was built in Murasakino and offerings were made every year on the 9th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar. This was called the Imamiya Festival. However, the Yasurai Festival, which is the festival of Eki Shrine within the grounds of Imamiya Shrine, is better known today. It is also called the Yasurai Flower Festival, and was held in the past on the 10th day of the 3rd month of the lunar calendar, but is now held on the second Sunday of April. Its origin is said to date back to April 1154 (Kyuju 1), when children from Kyoto made a pilgrimage in elegant attire and played drums and flutes.
