Paint that inhibits the progression of rust. It is also called anti-rust paint or rust-proof paint. The JIS defines it as anti-rust paint. Oxygen and water are necessary for steel to rust, and acid gases in the air such as carbon dioxide, sulfuric acid, and nitric acid are factors that promote corrosion. Anti-rust paints have two types of mechanism of action. One is that the paint film blocks the above environmental elements from contacting the iron surface, which is due to the paint film's ability to block water and gas permeability, and is mainly determined by the thickness of the paint film and the properties of the resin.

さびの進行を抑制する塗料。防錆（ぼうせい）塗料，防銹（ぼうしゆう）塗料ともいう。JISではさび止めペイントと定められている。鉄鋼がさびるには酸素と水が必要であり，空気中の炭酸ガス，硫酸，硝酸等の酸性ガスは腐食を促進する要素である。さび止め塗料の作用機構には次の2種類がある。一つは上記環境要素の鉄面への接触を塗膜によって遮断することであり，これは塗膜の水およびガス透過性阻止性能によるもので，主として塗膜の厚さと樹脂の性質によって支配される。
