…The greatest Dutch sculptor, C. Slueter, born in Haarlem, did not adhere to the International Gothic style and created imposing, voluminous stone statues, paving the way for a new realism, but he was mainly active in Dijon, France, and had little influence in his hometown. In painting, Jan Malouel (?-1415), who was active as a miniature painter at the French court, the Limbourg brothers, and Bouts, who served as city painter in Louvain, are usually placed in the history of French and Flemish art, respectively, despite being from the north. Artistic activities in the north include the wood sculptures of Adriaen van Wesel (c. 1420-c. 1489) of Utrecht and the traditional miniature production in the city. …
