A major American tobacco manufacturer. In recent years, it has been expanding its non-tobacco division, focusing on consumer goods. Its headquarters are in New York. The company was founded in 1890 when American tobacco magnate JB Duke merged five cigarette companies to form American Tobacco, Co. In 1904, the company merged with Consolidated Tobacco and Continental Tobacco, but was split up in 2011 due to antitrust laws. Subsidiaries separated at this time include BAT Industries, currently the world's largest tobacco manufacturer, and RJ Reynolds Industries, Inc., the largest in the United States.

アメリカの大手タバコ･メーカー。近年は消費財を中心に非タバコ部門を拡充している。本社ニューヨーク。1890年アメリカのタバコ王J.B.デュークが紙巻きタバコ会社5社を統合してアメリカン･タバコ社American Tobacco,Co.を設立したのに始まる。同社は1904年コンソリデーテッド･タバコ社，コンティネンタル･タバコ社と合併したが，11年反トラスト法により分割された。このとき分離された子会社には，現在世界最大のタバコ･メーカーであるB.A.T.インダストリーズ社，アメリカ最大のR.J.レーノルズ･インダストリーズ社R.J.Reynolds Industries,Inc.などがある。
