A general term for a group of parasitic wasps in the family Ichneumonidae of the order Hymenoptera of the class Insecta. They are large, measuring 20-40 mm in length, and are so named because they have an ovipositor that is longer than their body. They are beautiful wasps with a reddish-brown or blackish-brown body and numerous yellow spots. In Japan, the following species are known: Megarhyssa japonica (also known as Mon Onagabachi), M. groliosa (Ooa Meiro Onagabachi), Rhyssa jozana (Jozan Onagabachi), and R. persuasoria (Shirofu Onagabachi). These wasps are beneficial natural enemies that parasitize the larvae of wood wasps, which are wood pests, and are beneficial insects that make a hidden contribution to forest production in Japan. Female white-winged wasps thrust their long ovipositors through the surface of the trunk and lay eggs on the larvae of the Japanese hornet Urocerus japonicus hiding in tunnels within the wood.
