…He worked on physiological and chemical research with J. von Liebig at the Universities of Würzburg and Giessen, and in 1852 became professor of chemistry at the University of Munich. Together with his student and friend Carl von Voit (1831-1908), he developed a human respirometer and conducted a series of important experiments on human metabolism and nutrition, laying the foundations of experimental chemical methods in modern hygiene. He also played a leading role in the publication of the Journal of Hygiene and Journal of Biology, and in 1882 published the Grundlagen of Hygiene with Hugo von Ziemssen. …
