A former town in Shimoge County in northern Oita Prefecture. It occupies the middle reaches of the Yamakuni River and is mostly mountainous. Although there is little arable land, rice is cultivated, and milk, tea, and fruit are also produced. It is in the center of Yabakei and is included in the Yaba-Hita-Hiko-san Quasi-National Park. In March 2005, it was incorporated into Nakatsu City along with Hon-Yabakei Town, Yamakuni Town, and Sanko Village in Shimoge County. 183.70 km2 . Population: 5,572 (2003). 大分県北部，下毛(しもげ)郡の旧町。山国川中流域を占め，大部分は山地。耕地は少ないが，米作を行い，牛乳，茶，果樹なども産する。耶馬渓の中心で耶馬日田英彦山(やばひたひこさん)国定公園に含まれる。2005年３月下毛郡本耶馬渓町，山国町，三光村と中津市へ編入。183.70km2。5572人（2003）。
