A general term for four crab species belonging to the genus Scylla , family Portunidae, order Decapoda, class Malacostraca. There are four teeth on the frame and nine on the front edge of the carapace, all of which are triangular. The left and right chelae are different sizes, with one being larger than the other. Three species are found in Japan: S. serrata , S. olivacea , and S. paramamosain . This large species has a carapace width of up to 20 cm and a slightly elongated oval shape. S. spiny mob crabs are found throughout the Indo-West Pacific Ocean south of Sagami Bay, and are often found at the mouths of inland bays. They are well known as doman in Lake Hamana, Shizuoka Prefecture. They are abundant in mangrove swamps in tropical and subtropical regions south of the Ryukyu Islands, and are the most important crab for food.
