Yugoslav playwright. Born in Dubrovnik. He studied canon law in Siena and later served as rector and vice-rector, but quit due to his short temper. He started out writing poetry in the style of Petrarchan, but it didn't work out, so he turned to pastoral drama, especially comedies, which he enjoyed great success with. His most famous work, Uncle Maroe (premiered in 1551), is a delightful story about a miserly father and his prodigal son at the mercy of the wits of his servants and maids, and is still often performed today. In his later years, he died in Venice in despair.

ユーゴスラビアの劇作家。ドゥブロブニクの生れ。シエナで教会法を学び，後に学寮長，副学長まで務めるが，短気が災いして辞する。初めペトラルカ風の詩作をするがうまくゆかず，牧歌的な劇作，とりわけ喜劇に転じて大成功をおさめた。代表作《マロエ叔父さん》(1551初演)は，吝嗇（りんしよく）家の父と放蕩息子が家僕や女中の機知に翻弄される楽しいもので，今日でもしばしば上演されている。晩年は失意のうちにベネチアで没した。
