A term used in Japanese music. It refers to the hand (melody) that connects one song to the next, and is also called simply "ai." It is equivalent to an interlude in Western music. It is used to allow the singer to take a breath, to guide the rhythm and tempo of the song, and can also be used to emphasize the meaning of the lyrics. In Nagauta, a particularly long interlude is called "aikata." In Jiuta and Sokyo music, it is called "tegoto," and in Biwa music, it is called "danpo."
