When the norm for residence upon marriage is ultimately residence on the husband's side, this refers to temporary residence on the husband's side or a ceremonial marriage that takes place before the wife officially moves in. In either case, this marks the beginning of a practical marriage relationship. It is widespread from the Kanto region westward, but the details do not necessarily match. In the Izu Islands, a woman who will become a wife goes to her husband's house carrying water or firewood and meets his parents, which is called ashiire, and the marriage is then established with the wife staying at the wife's side or lodging house for a while. In this case, ashiire means official approval of the husband's temporary visitation of his wife as a preliminary step to practical married life.

婚姻居住が究極的には夫方居住であることを規範とする場合に，妻の正式引移り以前の段階で行われる一時的夫方居住または儀礼的嫁入りをいう。いずれもこれをもって実質的婚姻関係が開始される。関東以西に広く分布するがその内容は必ずしも一致しない。伊豆諸島では妻となる女性が水か薪を持って夫の家に行き，その親と対面をすませることをアシイレといい，以後しばらく妻方や寝宿に婚舎をおく婚姻が成立する。この場合のアシイレは実質的婚姻生活の前段階として，夫の妻に対する一時的訪婚の開始を公的に承認することを意味する。
