...The technique was praised as a postwar American "social realism." German cameraman Eugene Schufftan (1893-1977), known for inventing the "Schufftan Process," a trick photography method using mirrors, won the Academy Award for Best Black-and-White Cinematography for this work. George C. Scott, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor along with the other major categories, became a topic of conversation when he criticized the Academy Awards system, but later refused to accept the Best Actor award for Patton in 1970.
