A double salt of theophylline and ethylenediamine, it is a cardiac stimulant and bronchodilator. It is a bitter-tasting white or slightly yellow granule or powder that has made the poorly soluble theophylline water-soluble. It has central nervous system stimulant, coronary vasodilator, cardiotonic, diuretic, bronchodilator, and gastric juice secretion promoting effects, and is widely used for preventing bronchial asthma, asthma attacks, renal and hepatic edema, and angina attacks. As it is prone to causing gastrointestinal disorders, it is mainly administered intravenously and infused slowly. The usual dosage is 0.1 grams per dose, 0.3 grams per day, and the maximum dosage is 0.5 grams per dose, 1.5 grams per day.
