The Landgrave established his residence in Kassel from 1277 onwards, and expanded his sphere of influence while fighting against the Archbishop of Mainz, who was trying to expand his influence into Hesse. His power reached its zenith during the reign of Count Philipp der Grossmütige (1504-67).
