Philipp der Grossmütige (English spelling)

[Swiss Reformation]
Prior to this, since 1522, under the influence of Erasmus and Luther, Zwingli had been working with the city government in Zurich, Switzerland, to develop the Reformation movement, which had spread to Basel, Bern, and other cities. The Lutheran Landgrave Philipp der Grossmütige (1504-67) of Hesse attempted to unite German Protestants with the Zwinglians, and in 1529, he arranged a religious conference (Marburg Conference) between Luther, Melanchthon, and Zwingli and other Swiss Reformation leaders at his castle in Marburg. However, the two sides disagreed on the interpretation of the Eucharist, and the attempt to unite them failed. In the war with the Catholic cantons of Switzerland that broke out shortly after, Zwingli died in battle in 1531, and the Reformation in that area was destroyed.

His power reached its zenith during the reign of Count Philipp der Grossmütige (1504-67). During the time of the Protestant Reformation, he introduced Protestantism to his country in 1526, founded the University of Marburg as the first Protestant university in Germany in 1527, and played an active role as a central figure among the Protestant princes, such as attempting to mediate between the Lutherans and Calvinists. …
