The Kojiki states that Empress Jingu placed her staff at the gate of the ruler of Silla, indicating that the staff was a symbol of possession. For this reason, the staff played the role of a sign marking a boundary, and is called an imidzue (forbidden staff) when it indicates the boundary between the secular world and the sacred world. Legends surrounding place names such as tsuetate (standing on a staff) and tsuetsuki (pointing at a staff) are often related to this.
