…However, wild boars have a wide range of movement, are sensitive to smells, and are very cautious, so capturing them is not easy, and farmers without guns despised them as a major enemy of crops. To scare them away, farmers placed strong-smelling oil, old clothes, or carrion around the cultivated land, and used fences, earthen banks, stone walls, and other structures called shishidote and shishigaki (deer fences) to prevent wild boars from invading the cultivated land.
