Yearbook - year book

Yearbook - year book

A publication that contains the latest events, trends, and statistics about a particular region or field, and is published every year or every two years. It is also called an annual report or chronology. There are "general yearbooks" such as the "Yomiuri Yearbook" (edited by the Yomiuri Shimbun) that cover politics, economy, society, culture, etc., mainly for a certain country, and "specialized yearbooks" for a specific field such as the "Publishing Yearbook" (edited by Publishing News Co.), the "Religious Yearbook" (edited by the Agency for Cultural Affairs), the "Trade Yearbook" (edited by the Japan Customs Association), and the "Science Yearbook" (edited by the National Astronomical Observatory). There are also "encyclopedias" that supplement existing encyclopedias, such as the "Britannica Book of the Year" and the "Americana Annual." All of them emphasize record-keeping and resource-related properties.

The origin of the almanac can be traced back to ancient Babylonian astronomy. The first printed almanac in Europe was published in 1457. The oldest almanac still in print today is the Annual Register, first published in England in 1758. In Japan, the oldest is the International Almanac (translated by the Statistics Bureau) published in 1876 (Meiji 9), followed by the Imperial Japanese Statistical Yearbook (1882, the predecessor of the Japanese Statistical Yearbook) and the Current Affairs Yearbook (1917). Well-known internationally are the World Statistical Yearbook and World Population Yearbook published by the United Nations, the Whittaker Almanac and Statesman's Yearbook from the UK, the World Almanac and Book of Facts from the US, the Fischer Weltweiler from Germany, the Quid from France, the People's Republic of China (China) Yearbook from China, and the East Asia Yearbook and United Nations Yearbook from Korea. Some yearbooks are now available online.
