Nevelson

Russian-born American sculptor. Born in Kiev, he emigrated to the United States in 1905. From 1932 to 1933, he worked as an assistant to Diego Rivera on the production of murals in Mexico. From 1936, he began producing sculptures influenced by Cubism. After the war, he began creating relief-like assemblages by stacking wooden waste in wooden boxes. Even after moving from a black-painted series to a gold-painted series, the painterly frontality of his works continues to give them an altar-like quality. Since the 1970s, he has turned his attention to materials such as aluminum and epoxy resin, and has even produced large-scale outdoor works.

ロシア出身，米国の彫刻家。キエフに生まれ，1905年米国に移住。1932年から1933年にかけてメキシコでディエゴ・リベラの壁画制作の助手を務める。1936年からキュビスムの影響を受けた彫刻作品を発表する。戦後，木製の廃品を木箱に詰め，それらを積み上げたレリーフ状のアッサンブラージュに着手。黒い彩色のシリーズから金色のシリーズへと移行した後も，絵画的な正面性は作品に祭壇のような趣を与えている。1970年代以降はアルミニウムやエポキシ樹脂といった素材に関心を向け，さらには大規模な屋外作品も制作している。
