Bed - Nedoko

Japanese:
Bed - Nedoko

Rakugo. In Kamigata Rakugo, it was called "Neboku Joruri." It is also known as "Shiroto Gidayu." The owner of a house who loves Gidayu wants people to hear his art, so tonight he has his clerk call the people in his tenement house, but they all make excuses and no one comes. The shopkeepers also pretend to be sick and run away, so the owner gets angry and tells the people in the tenement house to leave and that he will dismiss them. Everyone gathers together in surprise, and the owner cheers them up and starts telling a story. It soon becomes quiet, so the owner takes a closer look and sees that everyone is asleep. When the owner gets angry again, only one boy, Sadakichi, is crying and awake. "What was sad about it? Was it the separation of a child, or Sendai-hagi?" "It's not that place." "Where is it?" "Over there." "Isn't that the bed where I recited the Gidayu narration?" "As for me... that's my bed." The original story can be found in Edo short stories such as "Seisuisho" and "Wakanhanashikai." It was the specialty of Katsura Bunraku 8th, but the content is interesting and there are still many performers who perform it today.
