A French ballet company formed to succeed the Ballets Russes, which was dissolved (1929) after Diaghilev's death from illness. The first performance was held in Monte Carlo in 1932 by Colonel de Basil (1888-1951) and René Blum (1878-1942), the director of the Monte Carlo Opera House. Of the many attempts to succeed Diaghilev, this ballet company was the most successful. The reason for this was that Sergei Grigoriev (1883-1968), one of the supporters of Diaghilev's troupe, was appointed stage director, and he recruited leading dancers A. Danilova, Chernyshova, and Boyzhikovsky to maintain the standard of the programs and improve the quality of the troupe's performers. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
