The United Kingdom was the first country to legally establish the gold standard. In 1816, the United Kingdom minted a one pound gold coin called the sovereign, which became its legal tender, and Bank of England notes were to be exchanged for this gold coin at this parity (Coinage Act). Since the relationship between banknotes and gold was clearly defined by the Bank of England Act in 1844, some consider this to be the year that the gold standard was established.

　最も早い時期に金本位制を法的に確立したのはイギリスである。1816年にイギリスはソブリンsovereignと名づけられた1ポンド金貨，ソブリン金貨を鋳造し，これを法定通貨として，この平価にもとづいてイングランド銀行券はこの金貨と交換されることとなった(貨幣法Coinage Act)。イングランド銀行法により銀行券と金との関係がはっきりと規定されたのが44年なので，この年をもって金本位制確立とみる見解もある。…
