Fox's razor - Fox's razor

Japanese: キツネノカミソリ - きつねのかみそり
Fox's razor - Fox's razor

A perennial plant of the Amaryllidaceae family (APG classification: Amaryllidaceae). A bulbous plant. The bulb is broadly ovate, 2-4 cm in diameter, and the outer skin is blackish brown. The leaves are 30-40 cm long and 8-10 mm wide, grow in early spring, die in summer, and flower stalks emerge after the leaves die. The flower stalk is 30-50 cm tall and bears 3-5 flowers at the top of the stem. The flowers bloom in August, are yellow-red, the tepals are 5-8 cm long, and there are six stamens almost the same length as the tepals. It grows wild in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Chugoku, and has been reported to have naturalized in Hokkaido (Oshima). The name comes from the razor-like shape of the leaves. The variety, Ookitsunenokamisouri, is larger overall, with tepals up to 9 cm long and stamens extending from the corolla.
