[Classification of the leisure industry]
In Towards a Leisure Civilization (1962), French sociologist Joffre Dumazedier classifies leisure activities into three categories: rest, recreation, and self-development (personality development). Looking at the leisure industry according to this, excluding rest, which involves almost no economic expenditure, we can broadly divide it into the following three categories. Among recreational leisure, release leisure includes industries such as eating out, watching television, records, and performances, as well as games and gambling. Among recreational leisure, recreational leisure is leisure that literally "recreates" the energy wasted by work and study, and has a stronger active element than the former.

　フランスの社会学者デュマズディエJoffre Dumazedierは《余暇文明へ向かって》(1962)の中で，レジャー活動を休息，気晴し，自己啓発(人格の発展)の三つに分類しているが，これに従ってレジャー産業をみると，まず休息は経済的支出がほとんど生じないので除外すると，次の三つに大別できる。気晴しレジャーのうちリリースrelease(発散，解放)的レジャーには，外食，テレビ，レコード，興行などの鑑賞，ゲーム，ギャンブルなどの勝負事，といった産業が含まれる。気晴しレジャーのうちレクリエーションrecreation的レジャーは労働，勉学で消耗した活力を文字どおり〈再(re)生産(creation)〉するためのレジャーで，前者よりは能動的な要素が強まる。…
