Japanese: くじ(籤∥鬮) - くじ

A form of divination that is extremely widespread around the world, in which chance is used to automatically select one option from a limited number of possibilities or options. Among the central forms of divination are those that interpret artificial phenomena as signs of the will of the gods, of a contest, of right or wrong, of ranking, etc., and lotteries are a prime example of this. The most common methods involve taking out a piece of paper, wood, grass, etc. that has been marked in advance, or throwing a pebble or other object.

あらかじめ限られた数の可能性もしくは選択肢の中から，偶然を利用して自動的に一つを選び出す方法で，世界中にきわめて広く分布している占いの一形態。占いの中で中心的な位置を占めるものに，人為的につくった現象を神の意向や，勝負，正邪，順位などの〈しるし〉として解釈するものがあるが，くじはその代表的なものである。あらかじめしるしをつけた紙片，木片，草などの一つを取り出す方法や，小石その他を投げる方法が最も一般的である。
