The phenomenon in which the amplitude of the composite wave changes periodically when two waves with different frequencies are superimposed. When two sine waves, A sin2π f ₁ t and A sin2π f ₂ t , with amplitudes of A and frequencies of f ₁ and f ₂ , are superimposed, the composite wave is 2 A cos{2π( f ₁ - f ₂ ) t /2} · sin{2π( f ₁ + f ₂ ) t /2} ( t represents time). This wave has an amplitude of 2 A cos{2π( f ₁ - f ₂ ) t /2} and a frequency of ( f ₁ + f ₂ )/2, the average of the two sine waves.

振動数の異なる二つの波が重ね合わされたとき，合成された波の振幅が周期的に変化する現象。いま振幅が両者ともAで，振動数がf₁とf₂の二つの正弦波Asin2πf₁tとAsin2πf₂tが重ね合わされたとき，合成波は2Acos｛2π(f₁－f₂)t/2｝･sin｛2π(f₁＋f₂)t/2｝となる(tは時間を表す)。これは振幅が2Acos｛2π(f₁－f₂)t/2｝で，(f₁＋f₂)/2，すなわち二つの正弦波の平均の振動数をもつ波である。
