Myanmar soldier and politician. He became a member of the Thakin Party and participated in the anti-British independence movement before World War II. He took power in two coups in 1958 and 1962, and subsequently served as Chairman of the Revolutionary Council (head of state), Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. He was Chairman of the State Council (president) from 1974 to 1981.
