Pamplona - Pamplona (English spelling)

The capital of Navarre province in northeastern Spain. Population 183,964 (2001). Located at an altitude of 449 meters on the Arga River at the southwest foot of the Pyrenees. Capital of the Medieval Kingdom of Navarre, and the political, economic and cultural center of the Navarre region. It has been the seat of a bishopric since 1027. Grapes, olives and grains are distributed here. Since around 1950, modern chemical and food industries have been based here. A fortified city built by the Roman Pompey, it was called Pompaelo. There are many historical buildings, such as the Cathedral of Pamplona (1397-1525), the star-shaped castle (1551), and the Church of San Saturnino (13th century). The city is famous for the Saint Fermin Festival, held every July, during which a heroic bull-running event can be seen in the city.
