Amobarbital is a brand name, and Isomytal (brand name) is the same drug. A white crystalline or crystalline powder hypnotic. Chemically, it is called 5-ethyl-5-isoamylbarbital acid. Barbital acid was synthesized in 1864, and barbital in 1903, but amytal was synthesized in 1923 and released by Lilly & Company in the United States. It is an intermediate-lasting barbiturate hypnotic drug, and its hypnotic effect appears about 30 minutes after taking it, and the patient will sleep soundly for 4 to 6 hours.

アモバルビタールamobarbitalの商品名で，イソミタールIsomytal(商品名)も同一薬品である。白色の結晶または結晶性の粉末の催眠薬。化学的には5‐エチル‐5‐イソアミルバルビタール酸という。バルビタール酸が合成されたのが1864年で，バルビタールは1903年に合成されたが，アミタールが合成されたのは23年で，アメリカのリリー社により発売された。バルビタール酸系催眠薬のうちで中間持続型に属し，服用後約30分で催眠効果が表れ，4～6時間熟眠する。
