A device that makes a liquid flow down a vertical solid wall and makes a gas flow in the space outside the wall, causing mass transfer or heat transfer between the gas and the liquid, and in some cases heat transfer between the falling liquid and the solid wall (see Figure 1). An industrial example of its use is the production of hydrochloric acid by absorbing synthetic hydrogen chloride gas into flowing water. Hydrogen chloride gas is easily soluble in water, so there is no need to particularly increase the gas-liquid contact area; rather, it is necessary to remove the heat generated during absorption.
