A dancer and choreographer from Russia (Soviet Union). His parents are said to be Tatars. He first danced in an amateur folk dance troupe in Ufa near the Ural Mountains, and later took private ballet lessons. He began studying ballet at the Vaganova Choreographic School in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) in 1955, and joined the Kirov Theatre (now the Mariinsky Theatre) ballet company. In 1961, he defected during the company's Paris tour. In 1962, he was invited to join the Royal Ballet in England, where he danced with Fonteyn in many works and gained popularity. He subsequently danced with ballet companies around the world, making a major contribution to improving the status of male dancers. He obtained Austrian citizenship in 1982, and served as dance director at the Paris Opera from 1983 to 1990. Immediately after her defection, she began choreography, and produced revisions of classical ballets such as La Bayadère (1963), The Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote (1966), and The Nutcracker (1967), as well as original works such as Manfred (1979) and The Tempest (1982).
