A fish of the family Pleuronectidae (illustration). It is a northern species that is widely distributed along the North Pacific coast, and in Japan it can be found in Hokkaido and northern Honshu. Its southern limit is Lake Kasumigaura on the Pacific side and Obama on the Sea of Japan side. In Hokkaido, it is also called Kawagarei. It has only a few sunken scales on the tail. Numerous small bump-like protuberances are scattered on the surface of the body. The lateral line is well developed. The eyed side is bluish green, and the eyeless side is pale yellow. Each fin is yellowish, and both the dorsal and anal fins have 4 to 7 clear black horizontal stripes, and the caudal fin has 3 to 4 black longitudinal stripes. カレイ目カレイ科の魚(イラスト)。北太平洋岸一帯に広く分布する北方種であり,日本では北海道および本州北部に見られる。南限地は,太平洋側では霞ヶ浦,日本海側では小浜である。北海道でカワガレイともいわれている。尾部にわずかな埋没したうろこを有するのみである。体表には数多くの小さな瘤状の隆起体が散在している。側線がよく発達している。有眼側は蒼緑色で,無眼側は淡黄色を呈する。各ひれとも黄色みを帯びており,背,しりびれの両方に明りょうな4~7条の黒色横帯が見られ,尾びれには,3~4条の黒色縦走帯が認められる。
