Ami tribe - Ami tribe (English spelling)
An ethnic group among the indigenous people of Taiwan who live in the central mountainous region of Taiwan. The population is estimated at about 125,000. Their language belongs to the Indonesian branch of the Austronesian language family. They cultivate millet and sorghum by slash-and-burn methods, but from around the end of the 19th century, wet-paddy rice cultivation accompanied by buffalo ploughing became widespread. The social structure is matrilineal, and although marriage into husbands is common, there is an age hierarchy with military overtones, and real political power is held by male elders.
