…Born in Zurich, he studied medicine in Bruges, Paris, and Basel, but he also had an interest in botany and zoology, and explored the Adriatic coast and the Alps, collecting specimens. His two-volume Opera botanica (1551-71), which contains 1,500 illustrations drawn by him, explores the affinities of plants based on precise depictions of flowers and fruits, and influenced K. von Linnaeus. His five-volume Historia animalium (1551-87), which marks the transition from the medieval didactic animal records to modern zoological texts, attempts to provide a comprehensive description of all the information known at the time, while also placing emphasis on actual observational facts, and includes descriptions of the external structure, location, habits, and anatomical characteristics of animals, accompanied by realistic illustrations drawn by the leading artists of the time. …
